From Cosmic Rank to Public Justification: The Theological, Philosophical, and Political Consequences of a Law-Governed Universe

Abstract The transition from a hierarchically ordered cosmos to a universe explained through uniform natural laws transformed more than scientific theory. It altered the conditions under which theological, philosophical, and political claims could be justified. In this essay I want to defend the thesis that the fundamental consequence of this transition was not the straightforward elimination of God, morality, purpose, or hierarchy, but the relocation of explanatory and normative authority . Once natural phenomena ceased to be explained by intrinsic rank, proper place, and final purpose, neither religious institutions nor political hierarchies could readily present their authority as the visible extension of cosmic order. This displacement helped create the intellectual conditions for religious pluralism, individual autonomy, legal equality, constitutional government, and scientific independence.
