From Cosmic Rank to Public Justification: The Theological, Philosophical, and Political Consequences of a Law-Governed Universe

Abstract

The transition from a hierarchically ordered cosmos to a universe explained through uniform natural laws transformed more than scientific theory. It altered the conditions under which theological, philosophical, and political claims could be justified. In this essay I want to defend the thesis that the fundamental consequence of this transition was not the straightforward elimination of God, morality, purpose, or hierarchy, but the relocation of explanatory and normative authority. Once natural phenomena ceased to be explained by intrinsic rank, proper place, and final purpose, neither religious institutions nor political hierarchies could readily present their authority as the visible extension of cosmic order. This displacement helped create the intellectual conditions for religious pluralism, individual autonomy, legal equality, constitutional government, and scientific independence. It also generated disenchantment, uncertainty about moral foundations, technocratic administration, environmental instrumentalism, and new hierarchies disguised as biological or statistical facts. The appropriate response is neither a restoration of the premodern chain of being nor a reduction of all reality to physical law. A defensible modern position combines methodological naturalism in science, non-reductive accounts of agency and normativity, and a political requirement that every hierarchy and collective purpose be publicly justified, limited, and revisable.

Introduction

In the classical and medieval imagination, the word cosmos signified more than the totality of physical objects. It referred to an ordered whole in which ontological degree, moral worth, causal power, and proper purpose were interconnected. Minerals, plants, animals, human beings, celestial intelligences, and God could be represented as occupying different positions in a graduated order of being. The structure of reality was simultaneously descriptive and normative: to understand what a being was also meant understanding its proper place, function, and end. Although this “great chain of being” was never a single doctrine accepted in precisely the same form by every classical and medieval thinker, the principles of plenitude, continuity, and gradation exercised a broad influence over European metaphysics, theology, ethics, and political imagination (Lovejoy, 1936).

The scientific transformation conventionally associated with Nicolas Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, René Descartes, Isaac Newton, and their successors progressively replaced this qualitative and teleological order with an indefinitely extended universe whose processes could be described mathematically. The same physical principles applied to terrestrial and celestial bodies; motion did not require an aspiration toward a “natural place”; and scientific explanations increasingly referred to efficient causes, mathematically expressible relations, and experimentally discoverable regularities. Koyré (1957) famously characterized this change as the movement from a closed world to an infinite universe. Yet the transformation was not merely spatial. It replaced a differentiated order of places and qualities with a comparatively homogeneous field of lawful relations.

This essay argues that the most fundamental consequence of the law-governed universe was a shift from received rank to justificatory responsibility. Scientific explanation no longer treated rank or final purpose as fundamental physical causes. Consequently, theological and political institutions could no longer assume that their own hierarchical arrangements were self-evidently grounded in the architecture of the universe. Purpose did not simply disappear, but ceased to function as an uncontested explanatory property of nature. Rank likewise survived, but increasingly had to be defended as functional, conventional, meritorious, or democratically authorized rather than cosmologically ordained.

This argument is not a monocausal history in which modern physics mechanically produces secularism, liberalism, or democracy. Scientific, religious, economic, legal, and political developments interacted in historically contingent ways. Nor does the argument infer from the historical origins of an idea that the idea is true or false. It instead identifies a change in the available forms of explanation and legitimacy: a natural-law conception of the universe makes some theological and political arguments less credible and others more necessary.

Conceptual Framework: Two Models of Order

A hierarchical cosmos combines at least three propositions. First, reality is ontologically graded: beings possess different degrees of perfection or fullness of being. Second, reality is teleologically ordered: natural entities and processes are intelligible partly through the ends toward which they characteristically tend. Third, cosmic structure has normative correspondence: the proper ordering of the soul, household, church, or polity reflects or participates in a more comprehensive order of reality. Political hierarchy can therefore appear not merely useful but natural, morally significant, and metaphysically warranted.

A law-governed universe, by contrast, explains events by reference to general relations that apply uniformly under equivalent conditions. The movement of a planet, the fall of an object, and the interaction of particles are not explained by their moral worth or place in an ontological scale. Nothing in a physical equation assigns aristocrats, clergy, laborers, nations, sexes, or races a higher metaphysical status. Scientific laws, as scientific laws, are indifferent to social rank.

“Law-governed” should nevertheless be used cautiously. Philosophers disagree about whether laws literally govern events, summarize regularities, express relations among universals, identify dispositional powers, or describe features of the best systematic representation of the world. Scientific practice also depends on idealization, ceteris paribus conditions, statistical models, mechanisms, and scale-specific theories rather than a single catalogue of exceptionless commands (Cartwright, 1983; Maudlin, 2007). The present argument therefore requires only a modest premise: successful physical explanations characteristically avoid appeals to moral rank and intrinsic cosmic purpose, regardless of the ultimate metaphysics of lawhood.

It is also essential to distinguish laws of nature from the natural-law tradition in ethics and jurisprudence. Physical laws describe or systematize natural processes. Moral natural law identifies reasons, goods, or norms allegedly grounded in rational nature. The decline of teleological physics does not logically refute moral natural law, but it deprives some versions of that tradition of an immediately visible cosmological foundation. Moral purposes must then be defended through an account of practical reason, human flourishing, divine command, autonomy, rights, or social cooperation rather than inferred directly from physical structure.

The loss at issue is therefore limited but profound. Rank and purpose are lost primarily as fundamental principles of natural-scientific explanation. It does not follow that purposes are unreal in human action, that biological functions are meaningless, that normative distinctions are impossible, or that theological interpretations are irrational. To infer metaphysical purposelessness directly from the methodological exclusion of final causes would confuse the scope of a method with the total structure of reality.

The Historical Transformation Was Not a Simple Victory of Science over Theology

The modern concept of laws of nature did not initially arise as an atheistic alternative to divine government. Early modern thinkers frequently understood natural laws as expressions of divine rationality, will, or constancy. René Descartes associated the stability of natural laws with divine immutability, while Newtonian and post-Newtonian thinkers debated how law, providence, miracle, and divine action should be related. The language of natural law was partly transferred from theology and jurisprudence into natural philosophy (Daston & Stolleis, 2008; Harrison, 2019).

Consequently, a universe governed by natural laws does not logically entail atheism. The laws may be interpreted as divine ordinances, created regularities, metaphysically necessary relations, brute facts, or elements of a scientific representation. Alvin Plantinga (2011), for example, argues that theism and science are not intrinsically opposed, while classical accounts of primary and secondary causation allow natural entities to possess real causal efficacy without becoming independent of divine creation (Aquinas, 1981, I, q. 22, a. 3; q. 105, a. 5).

Nevertheless, once laws of nature became explanatorily autonomous once scientific inquiry no longer needed to infer particular physical outcomes from theological propositions, the same concept that had helped articulate divine order also made a religious interpretation of that order optional. Theologically generated concepts could be detached from their original theological framework. This historical irony supports neither a triumphalist narrative of scientific enlightenment nor the claim that modern science is merely theology in disguise. It demonstrates that intellectual concepts can migrate between domains and acquire new justificatory roles.

Theological Consequences

The relocation of God

Within a visibly hierarchical cosmos, God could be represented as the summit and sustaining source of a graduated order. When the cosmos became an indefinite universe of quantitatively describable relations, God was increasingly conceived either as the transcendent legislator of nature or as unnecessary to the explanation of particular events. The first possibility encouraged forms of natural theology and deism; the second contributed to methodological and metaphysical naturalism.

This development altered the social conditions of belief. Charles Taylor (2007) argues that modern secularity is not adequately defined as the simple disappearance of religion. It is a condition in which religious belief becomes one option among several, contested within what he calls an “immanent frame.” Nature can be understood without reference to transcendence even when individuals continue to interpret it religiously. Religious faith therefore becomes less socially axiomatic and more explicitly interpretive, voluntary, and vulnerable to alternatives.

The fundamental theological consequence is thus not the refutation of God but the end of God’s uncontested role in ordinary natural explanation. Theology can no longer rely on gaps in scientific knowledge without exposing itself to progressive displacement (the fallacy of creationism). It must instead address questions of existence, intelligibility, value, dependence, revelation, salvation, and ultimate meaning, which are questions that are not straightforwardly answered by predicting physical events.

Providence and divine action

Uniform natural law creates a problem for interventionist pictures of divine action. A miracle understood simply as a suspension or violation of a law appears to place divine agency in competition with natural causes. God then resembles one more force acting within an otherwise closed causal system. This conception produces an unstable dilemma: either natural laws are genuinely reliable, in which case intervention seems exceptional and evidentially problematic, or divine action is pervasive, in which case scientific regularity appears less autonomous than scientific practice assumes.

Classical theism need not accept this dilemma. In Aquinas’s primary-secondary causation framework, divine causality and created causality do not operate on the same explanatory level. God does not ordinarily replace created causes but enables them to be genuine causes. On this account, the success of natural explanation is not evidence of divine absence. It is compatible with a doctrine of creation in which natural things possess stable powers and operations.

This solution, however, has an important consequence: providence becomes less empirically transparent. Particular events cannot ordinarily be identified as providential merely because their natural causes are unknown. Divine purpose, when affirmed, is apprehended through a theological interpretation of the whole rather than read directly from deviations in physical regularity. The law-governed universe therefore encourages a less interventionist and less anthropomorphic theology, but it also makes divine action harder to distinguish publicly from natural occurrence.

The intensification of the problem of evil

A hierarchical and teleological worldview could interpret suffering through cosmic station, divine pedagogy, inherited order, or an ultimate harmonization of apparently partial evils. A law-governed universe places greater emphasis on the morally indifferent regularity of physical processes. Earthquakes, genetic mutations, infections, and stellar events do not distribute their effects according to virtue or social rank. The same regularity that makes scientific prediction and technological control possible also produces indiscriminate suffering.

This intensifies the problem of evil because suffering is no longer easily represented as the direct execution of a morally differentiated cosmic order. Yet abandoning regularity would not solve the problem. A world whose causal patterns changed constantly in response to moral desert would make responsible action, learning, and stable embodiment difficult. The theological problem is therefore not merely why God permits laws, but why a law-governed creation includes vulnerability, contingency, evolutionary waste, and catastrophic harm.

Theologically serious responses must consequently avoid claiming to identify a specific divine purpose for every instance of suffering. They may appeal to the goods made possible by stable causation, creaturely autonomy, eschatological redemption, or the limits of human understanding, but each response carries philosophical costs. The natural-law universe thus moves theodicy away from explanations based on visible rank and toward questions about the value and moral intelligibility of an autonomous creation.

The transformation rather than disappearance of religious equality

It would be mistaken to suppose that political equality arose only after theology was removed from public life. Important early modern arguments for equality were explicitly theological. John Locke’s theory, for example, treated human beings as equal because they were creatures of one God and were not naturally subordinated to one another without adequate authorization. Jeremy Waldron (2002) argues that the Christian foundations of Lockean equality are not incidental additions but integral to its structure.

The decline of cosmic hierarchy therefore had an ambiguous theological effect. It weakened religious justifications of inherited status, but religious premises also helped articulate the equality that replaced them. Modern equality cannot be adequately described as either purely secular or merely a disguised theological doctrine. It arose through overlapping theological, philosophical, legal, and political arguments.

The enduring consequence is that theology loses the right to infer social subordination directly from cosmological order. Religious political claims must instead explain how their doctrines respect the equal standing of persons who do not share them. Theology remains capable of contributing to public moral reasoning, but it no longer possesses an uncontested monopoly over the interpretation of nature or political legitimacy.

Philosophical Consequences

From final causes to the separation of facts and values

The decline of teleological physics changed the grammar of explanation. To explain an event scientifically came increasingly to mean identifying prior conditions, mechanisms, mathematical relations, or probabilistic dependencies rather than the good or end for the sake of which the event occurred. Final causes were not necessarily eliminated from every form of inquiry, but they ceased to function as fundamental components of physical explanation.

This change sharpened the distinction between descriptions of what occurs and judgments concerning what ought to occur. David Hume’s warning that normative conclusions cannot be derived without argument from purely descriptive premises expresses a central difficulty of the post-teleological intellectual world (Hume, 2007). If physical facts contain no intrinsic social ranking, then no political hierarchy follows simply from the structure of matter. If evolution explains how a disposition arose, it does not by itself establish that acting upon that disposition is morally right.

This separation has an emancipatory effect. It blocks direct inferences from “natural difference” to rightful domination and exposes many traditional appeals to nature as insufficient. Yet it also destabilizes moral confidence. If values are not legible in the physical structure of the universe, moral philosophy must identify another source of normativity: rational consistency, autonomy, flourishing, divine command, contractual agreement, care, recognition, or historically constituted practices.

Alasdair MacIntyre (2007) interprets this development pessimistically. He argues that the Enlightenment inherited moral rules from older teleological traditions while abandoning the conception of a human telos that had made those rules intelligible. Modern moral discourse consequently risks becoming a conflict among incommensurable assertions. His diagnosis identifies a genuine problem, but his proposed recovery of Aristotelian teleology does not prove that a comprehensive cosmic hierarchy is necessary for coherent ethics. Moral reasons may be grounded in the conditions of agency, vulnerability, social cooperation, or human flourishing without restoring premodern physics.

Purpose becomes practical rather than cosmically assigned

In a hierarchical cosmos, a person’s purpose could be understood as partly determined by species, estate, vocation, gender, or divinely ordered place (scala natura, Great Chain of Being). In a post-teleological universe, purpose increasingly becomes a task of practical reason and collective interpretation. Individuals and communities must articulate, test, and revise their ends.

This development expands freedom but also increases existential burden. A person liberated from a fixed cosmic station gains the possibility of self-direction, yet loses the assurance that a particular life has been assigned an objective role in the whole. Meaning becomes less like the discovery of a predetermined office and more like the construction of a coherent life through commitments that can be justified to oneself and others.

The result need not be nihilism. The absence of a physical inscription of purpose does not imply the absence of reasons for action. Love, inquiry, artistic creation, care, justice, friendship, and political solidarity can possess value without being the predetermined goal of cosmic evolution. The crucial difference is epistemic and ethical: such purposes require interpretation and justification rather than mere conformity to inherited rank.

Determinism and chance do not settle the problem of freedom

A law-governed universe is frequently associated with determinism, but natural law and determinism are not identical. Laws may be deterministic, probabilistic, statistical, emergent, or formulated as constraints rather than chronological commands. Philosophers also disagree about whether deterministic causation is compatible with responsible agency.

More importantly, randomness does not by itself create freedom or purpose. An action does not become responsible merely because it includes an undetermined event. Chance can interrupt necessity without supplying agency, judgment, or authorship. The relevant philosophical task is to explain how deliberation, reasons, character, and social accountability operate within the natural world.

A plausible solution treats agency as a real higher-level capacity instantiated in, but not explanatorily replaced by, lower-level processes. Human actions have physical realizations, but they are also intelligible through beliefs, intentions, reasons, rules, and commitments. Explaining why a person raised an arm by referring to neural and muscular processes does not exclude the explanation that the person voted, signaled, promised, or requested permission. These explanations answer different questions.

Emergence restores levels of organization, not a chain of moral worth

Modern science itself undermines the strongest forms of reductionism. Philip Anderson (1972) argued that understanding fundamental components does not automatically provide an understanding of complex organized systems. New patterns, regularities, and explanatory concepts become indispensable at higher levels of organization.

Biology likewise retains function language without requiring foresightful cosmic design. Ernst Mayr (1961) distinguished immediate physiological explanations from evolutionary explanations, while contemporary accounts of biological function commonly refer to the selection history or organizational contribution of traits. A heart can be said to have the function of circulating blood even when its existence is explained through natural selection rather than a prior intention to produce hearts (Mayr, 1961).

Emergence and biological teleonomy therefore recover legitimate forms of purposive vocabulary, but they do not restore the great chain of being. A hierarchy of explanatory levels is not a hierarchy of moral value. The claim that cells, organisms, institutions, and ecosystems require different concepts does not establish that one social group is naturally entitled to rule another. Complexity generates organization and functional differentiation, not inherited sovereignty.

The need to integrate the scientific and manifest images

Wilfrid Sellars (1963) distinguished the scientific image of human beings from the manifest image in which persons deliberate, promise, blame, justify, and act. A reductive naturalism attempts to replace the manifest image entirely with scientific description. An anti-scientific humanism treats the scientific image as irrelevant to human self-understanding. Neither position is adequate.

The philosophical task is integration. Human beings are natural organisms subject to physical and biological processes, but they are also participants in a “space of reasons” structured by claims, obligations, interpretations, and institutions. Normative authority is not an additional physical force. A promise does not move atoms as gravity does, yet promises alter what persons are entitled or obligated to do because they participate in socially sustained practices.

The loss of cosmic purpose therefore requires a plural account of explanation. Physical laws explain causal possibility and constraint. Biological concepts explain function and adaptation. Psychological and social concepts explain agency, meaning, and institutionally mediated action. Ethical and political arguments assess which purposes deserve allegiance. None of these explanatory forms should be confused with the others.

Political Consequences

The delegitimation of inherited rank

The most direct political consequence of the law-governed universe is negative: physical nature does not provide an evident title to political rule. Once terrestrial and celestial bodies are subject to the same laws, and once human beings are natural organisms rather than occupants of metaphysically fixed estates, inherited political status becomes harder to present as a necessary reflection of cosmic architecture.

This does not mean that modern naturalism logically entails democracy. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) began from a form of natural equality, where particularly equality in vulnerability and the capacity to threaten others, and yet concluded that peace required an overwhelmingly powerful sovereign (Hobbes, 1651/1996). John Locke connected equality with natural rights, limited government, and consent (Locke, 1689/1988). The same rejection of an intrinsically political cosmic rank can therefore support different institutional conclusions.

What changes is the burden of proof. Authority must be justified through protection, consent, law, representation, expertise, tradition, or contribution to common goods. Birth and status are no longer sufficient simply because they allegedly reproduce the order of the universe. Even when hierarchy remains necessary, for example, in courts, scientific institutions, emergency services, schools, or complex organizations, it must be defended by reference to function and accountability.

From substantive cosmic unity to public justification

A hierarchical cosmos could support a political community organized around a comprehensive conception of the good. In a pluralistic society, citizens disagree about religion, metaphysics, salvation, virtue, and the meaning of life. The state can no longer assume that one cosmic narrative commands universal acceptance.

Modern political liberalism responds by shifting the basis of legitimacy from agreement about ultimate purpose to agreement about fair terms of cooperation. John Rawls (2005) argues that political principles should be justifiable to citizens regarded as free and equal despite their adherence to different comprehensive doctrines. Jürgen Habermas (2008) similarly seeks a postmetaphysical framework in which secular and religious citizens participate in public reasoning without allowing either scientific naturalism or religious authority to monopolize political legitimacy.

This procedural turn is a major achievement. It permits peaceful cooperation without requiring metaphysical uniformity. Its cost is that politics may appear unable to articulate substantive common purposes beyond rights, stability, and fair procedure. Liberal institutions can protect the freedom to pursue meaning while remaining comparatively silent about which forms of life are admirable.

The resulting tension is permanent rather than accidental. A state that imposes one comprehensive purpose risks oppression. A state that refuses every substantive judgment risks emptiness, privatization of meaning, or domination by market and administrative imperatives. The solution is not complete neutrality, which is impossible, but public contestation over common goods under conditions that preserve equal standing and revisability.

The rise of administration, statistics, and normalization

The political analogue of uniform natural law is the aspiration to govern through general rules applicable to formally equal subjects. This aspiration supports the rule of law, predictable administration, standardized rights, and restraints on arbitrary privilege. It also encourages states to make populations measurable, comparable, and administratively legible.

Ian Hacking (1990) documents the emergence of statistical modes of thought in which population-level regularities became explanatory and administrative objects. Theodore Porter (1995) shows how quantification acquired authority partly because numbers appeared impersonal and capable of reducing dependence on discretionary judgment. Uniform measurement could therefore promote fairness, reproducibility, and public accountability.

Yet measurement does not eliminate power. It reorganizes it. Categories determine what is visible, averages establish standards, and deviations become objects of intervention. Michel Foucault (1977) describes the emergence of disciplinary institutions that classify, examine, normalize, and correct individuals. Political authority is no longer exercised only through sovereign command from above; it also operates through schools, prisons, hospitals, barracks, workplaces, surveys, and expert classifications.

The loss of metaphysical rank therefore does not produce a flat society. It transforms status hierarchy into administrative differentiation. The subject is formally equal before general law but continuously compared with statistical norms concerning health, intelligence, productivity, risk, conduct, and employability.

The naturalization of new hierarchies

Premodern hierarchy justified inequality by appealing to birth, estate, divine order, or inherited function. Modern societies frequently justify inequality through allegedly objective differences in talent, fitness, intelligence, productivity, civilization, race, or economic contribution. Hierarchy returns not as sacred rank but as measured fact.

This transformation can make domination more difficult to challenge. A divinely ordained hierarchy visibly rests on theological premises. A statistical or biological hierarchy can present itself as politically neutral because it claims merely to report nature. Yet classifications are affected by institutional purposes, sampling practices, background inequalities, and decisions about what should be measured.

Modern racial hierarchy illustrates this danger. Charles W. Mills (1997) argues that ostensibly universal social-contract traditions historically coexisted with a racial order that excluded nonwhite peoples from full personhood. Sylvia Wynter (2003) similarly analyzes how the universal category of “Man” came to overrepresent a culturally specific Western, bourgeois, and biologized conception of the human. Older theological distinctions could thus be replaced by secular classifications that continued to rank populations while presenting those rankings as natural or scientific.

Michel Foucault’s analysis of biopolitics identifies a related development: modern political power manages the life of populations and can use racial divisions to distinguish lives that should be protected from lives exposed to injury or death (Foucault, 2003). The universal applicability of natural laws therefore does not guarantee political universalism. Equality at the level of physical law can coexist with exclusion at the level of socially constructed personhood.

The critical political principle must accordingly be stronger than the assertion that all humans belong to one natural species. Political equality requires institutions that prevent contingent empirical differences from being converted without further justification into unequal moral status or rights.

Technocracy and the confusion of expertise with sovereignty

A law-governed universe enhances the authority of those capable of identifying causal relations and predicting consequences. In many domains this authority is indispensable. Epidemiologists, engineers, climate scientists, economists, and other specialists possess knowledge that democratic decision-making cannot responsibly ignore.

Expertise, however, answers primarily instrumental questions: what is likely to happen, which means are effective, what risks are measurable, and what constraints apply. It does not by itself determine which risks are acceptable, whose interests should prevail, or which ends a community ought to pursue. When political decisions are represented as the unavoidable output of scientific or economic laws, contestable value judgments can be concealed behind technical necessity.

James C. Scott (1998) demonstrates how large-scale schemes of social engineering fail when abstract models suppress local knowledge, practical judgment, and complex interdependencies. The problem is not scientific knowledge as such but epistemic overreach: the assumption that a simplified model provides sufficient grounds for comprehensive political control.

The political consequence is therefore paradoxical. The natural-law worldview undermines top-down metaphysical hierarchy, yet its prestige can support a new top-down hierarchy of expertise. A democratic response must respect specialized knowledge while preserving public contestation over ends, distributions, uncertainties, and acceptable trade-offs.

The environmental ambiguity of disenchantment

The displacement of intrinsic natural purpose has contradictory ecological consequences. On one side, mechanistic representations of nature can facilitate its treatment as passive material available for extraction and control. Carolyn Merchant (1980) associates the transition from organic to mechanistic images of nature with changing attitudes toward domination, while Lynn White jr.  (1967) argues controversially that aspects of Western Christianity contributed to an anthropocentric and exploitative relationship with the nonhuman world.

On the other side, modern science also abolishes the cosmological exceptionalism of humanity. Human beings consist of the same matter, depend on the same ecological processes, and remain subject to the same planetary constraints as other organisms. Evolutionary theory embeds humanity within the history of life rather than placing it in a separately created biological rank.

The absence of cosmic hierarchy therefore supports two opposed attitudes. Nature may be regarded as valueless material, or humanity may be understood as one vulnerable participant in an interdependent biosphere. Scientific description alone does not choose between these conclusions. Environmental responsibility requires normative premises concerning suffering, flourishing, intergenerational justice, biodiversity, dependence, and restraint.

Counterarguments

A hierarchical cosmos provided meaning, limits, and social cohesion

A defender of the hierarchical worldview may argue that it integrated facts, values, personal identity, and political obligation. Individuals knew their place, institutions possessed shared purposes, and nature was not reduced to neutral material. Modernity, by contrast, produces alienation, moral fragmentation, and limitless technological expansion.

This objection identifies genuine losses. A society cannot endure on causal explanation and procedural rules alone. Human beings require narratives, practices, loyalties, and conceptions of flourishing. Nevertheless, the coherence of a worldview does not establish its truth or justice. A system may generate meaning by assigning subordinate groups a fixed and unequal place. The normative question is not whether hierarchy creates order, but whether that order can be justified to those subject to it.

Modern societies should therefore recover common goods and ecological limits without treating inherited rank as metaphysically necessary. Shared purposes can be democratically formed and institutionally embodied while remaining open to criticism and revision.

A law-governed universe does not disprove transcendent purpose

This counterargument is correct. Scientific explanation cannot, merely by excluding final causes from its methods, demonstrate that no divine or cosmic purpose exists. The historical origins of natural-law language in theology reinforce the point. Scientific naturalism and metaphysical naturalism must not be conflated.

The appropriate conclusion, however, is not that theological purpose may again function as an uncontested political premise. A purpose that cannot be established by scientific inquiry and is disputed among reasonable citizens cannot automatically authorize coercive institutions. It may orient religious communities and contribute to public reasoning, but its political use remains subject to standards of equality, evidence, reciprocity, and freedom of conscience.

Without objective cosmic ends, morality becomes subjective

This objection assumes that moral objectivity requires purposes physically inscribed in the universe. That assumption is too strong. Mathematical truth is not a physical force, and logical validity is not a measurable particle property; nevertheless, neither is merely subjective. Similarly, normative judgments may be justified through reasons concerning consistency, agency, harm, reciprocity, flourishing, or institutional fairness.

The rejection of cosmic teleology does make moral justification more demanding. It eliminates an easy transition from “natural order” to “rightful order.” But increasing the burden of justification is not equivalent to making justification impossible. It may instead protect moral reasoning from the naturalization of prejudice.

Emergent order restores hierarchy and purpose

Emergence demonstrates that complex systems exhibit organized patterns not transparently derivable from descriptions of isolated components. It also supports legitimate functional explanation in biology and social science. It does not, however, restore an axiological ladder extending from matter to supreme political authority.

An ecosystem can contain nested levels without assigning a hereditary ruling right to any human group. An institution can differentiate roles without treating officeholders as superior beings. Emergent hierarchy is organizational and explanatory; political hierarchy is normative. Moving from one to the other requires an additional argument.

A Defensible Post-Hierarchical Position

The strongest response to the collapse of the hierarchical cosmos is neither nostalgic restoration nor reductive naturalism. It is a disciplined pluralism governed by three distinctions.

First, natural science should retain methodological naturalism. Physical events should be investigated through publicly testable causal, mathematical, mechanistic, and probabilistic explanations rather than appeals to the moral rank or hidden purpose of the entities involved. This commitment protects scientific inquiry from sectarian control and permits cumulative correction.

Second, methodological naturalism should not be inflated into explanatory imperialism. The fact that all human action has physical conditions does not show that physical vocabulary exhausts agency, meaning, law, or morality. Reasons, promises, institutions, and political obligations are real features of organized human life even though they are not additional fundamental forces.

Third, political hierarchy must satisfy a principle of publicly accountable functionality. Hierarchies may be warranted where coordination, competence, responsibility, or emergency action requires differentiated authority. But legitimate hierarchy must be limited in scope, attached to offices rather than superior kinds of person, answerable to those affected, and open to review. No position should be treated as politically authoritative merely because it is inherited, sacred, statistically normal, economically successful, or claimed to be biologically superior.

Purpose should be treated similarly. A democratic society cannot remain purposeless, but its common purposes must be proposed, debated, embodied, and revised rather than presented as unchallengeable cosmic facts. The loss of predetermined purpose therefore increases collective responsibility. Human beings can no longer attribute injustice to their assigned place in the order of things. They must decide which institutions they will maintain and accept responsibility for the foreseeable consequences.

Conclusion

The replacement of the hierarchical cosmos by a universe governed through natural laws did not simply substitute chaos for order. It substituted one kind of order for another. The older order connected causal explanation, metaphysical degree, moral value, social rank, and final purpose. The modern scientific order separates these domains. Nature is explained through general relations that are indifferent to inherited status, while moral and political purposes must be justified through distinct forms of reasoning.

The theological consequence is not the demonstration of atheism but the transformation of faith from an axiomatic public cosmology into a contested interpretation of reality. Divine action can no longer function as a routine substitute for natural explanation, and providence becomes less empirically transparent. The philosophical consequence is not the necessary triumph of nihilism but the separation of causal description from normative justification. Purpose becomes practical, interpretive, and responsibility-laden. The political consequence is not the automatic arrival of democracy but the delegitimation of inherited rank and the transfer of authority toward consent, public reason, functional competence, and accountable institutions.

These gains remain unstable. Sacred hierarchies can be replaced by racial, statistical, economic, bureaucratic, or technocratic hierarchies. A society that rejects cosmic purpose can still absolutize the market, nation, state, race, class, or technology. Modernity does not eliminate the desire for rank and purpose; it deprives that desire of an uncontested cosmological foundation.

The deepest consequence of the law-governed universe is therefore a new burden of justification. Rank can no longer explain why a person ought to rule. Purpose can no longer be inferred from physical position. Authority, inequality, and collective ends must be defended before those who are subject to them. The universe may be indifferent to human rank, but political institutions cannot be. When cosmic hierarchy ceases to decide who should command and what life is for, those questions become more difficult, but also more genuinely ethical and political.
